School Philosophy

Alcuin School is committed to educating the whole child, allowing each child to develop at his or her own pace in a nurturing and supportive environment. It’s unique strength is a small and supportive environment with mixed ages that closely reflects the family structure young children
are accustomed to. This arrangement allows the children maximum emotional support, while providing opportunities to develop the social skills necessary for success at school and in the community. Small class size allows the individualized instruction and emotional support needed by young children during the crucial early school years. A mixed-age group allows the children to have the opportunity to learn from each other, as well as to take on leadership roles as they grow older.

All children need a challenging and exciting school program, but typically vary in their needs for instruction. Alcuin School offers a broad range of developmentally appropriate instructional methods that accommodate the different learning styles and rates of young learners. Instruction is not based on educational views of “progressive” and “traditional” education, but on the needs of each child.

Alcuin School helps students develop work habits and social skills that prepare them for a lifetime of learning enjoyment and success.

Young children are naturally spontaneous, active and motivated learners and it is Alcuin School's goal to maintain this sense of joy and excitement, while providing them with a variety of learning skills that will help them explore and understand the world around them. Work values at Alcuin School include curiosity, perseverance, initiative, creativity and orderliness.

Children at Alcuin School become aware of their own feelings and those of others, develop an awareness of and confidence in their abilities and learn how to regulate their feelings and impulses. Social and emotional values include respect, responsibility, compassion, honesty and self-control. The use of tradeoffs and respectful, nonviolent responses to conflicts and a respect for self, others and the planet Earth are developed and encouraged.
